TAGS all over the Place

Quick video Trailer The creation of the TAGS!

They are anonymous. They are viral, reckless and undesirable. They grow where they can. Innocent bystanders run daily past ’em. They arise casually and rarely come alone. They appear on street posts, dustbins, facades, on art in public spaces, historic buildings and religious institutions. No surface in urban areas is safe from them. For years, they cover most suburbs and inner cities, destroy their proper image and cost a fortune to clean.
But have you ever imagined today’s cities without tags and graffiti ? Who knows actually exactly what is the meaning of TAGS? And what happens culturally and symbolically, if TAGS are suddenly displayed on a advertising poster? The exhibition offers an encounter with the misunderstood character of TAGS and a speculative view to their future development.

Here a few nice pictures of the Stencil Bastards 3 Opening:

It was a great evening and lots of people came and enjoyed the stencil art, the drinks, the music and themselves. Almost all of the artists where still here and so they had some good chats with the Stencil-aficionados. I was later laying down some serious tunes on the turntables, most of the people liked it a lot, there was some dancing involved… Thanks to all who showed up! Hope we see you for the next show again.

The Stencil Bastards concept: for a month several different micro-cosmoses of Stencil Art will be shared with visitors in the gallery. Each of the Stencil Bastards will be represented in a room of his/their own. The artists put their stencils on found objects, canvases and of course directly on the wall as well. Visitors will be surrounded by fresh international Stencil Art. In addition to presenting new original Stencil works the exhibition seeks to bring people together and raise awareness for stencil art in the streets.

Since then some of the world’s biggest Stecil artists including Epsylon Point, M-City, Btoy, Eime, Snik, Stf Moscato and Penny, transformed this unique spot in Zurich within two smashing Stencil Bastards Group Shows into a distinctive hotspot for Stencil Art in Switzerland. It’s a great honour that this year’s eight notorius Stencil Artists who travelled the streets of the world turn inward once again for us to see this unique Stencil group show in Zurich.

Check out the awesome Master thesis which Chatherine Eisendle did around the subject of Stencils!
It is truly worth a read. For now german only.

And on a most noteworthy sidenote: Unfortunately now four of C215′s stencils got stolen in the last months off of the streets by a sad litte prick.

NO(W)HERE* Urban Art Expo

Starkart presents the first Urban Art Expo in Switzerland. Since this art movement enjoys internationally great recognition, seems like Zurich is now ready for an expo on this topic. First of all, with the exhibition NO(W)HERE* we want to invite all the curious people. Come with us on a journey through space and time and experience the phenomenon of Street- and Urban-Art. STARKART wants to equip you with knowledge regarding the origin and diversity of Urban Art. The works of 3 female and 27 male artists from five continents will be shown in this unique expo. By means of the works shown at the NO(W)HERE* expo, there is supposed to be an exemplary approximation-ability towards the artists’ often very extensive oeuvre.

The artworks are presented in clear steps. In addition to form, motives and colors, we think that intertextuality and complex reference-structures, that go above and beyond the artwork itself are especially relevant. As a result their respective positioning within the urban space should be most of all critically re-viewd. Visitors can get a compact encounter with various visual characteristics and techniques. This makes it easier to see through the thick and diverse urban art-jungle. We show Stencils, freehand sprayart, pasteup, objects and installations. Furthermore there will be videos, texts and guides on the topic. The probably most fun part is the «DIY» Do it yourself – stencil action workshop, where visitors can get their hands dirty and create their own stencil. For those that always wanted to own an original Banksy, this is the best opportunity…

Come in and find out 😉

Roman Leu
